What is «Qyz jasauy»?

It is not merely the gathering of a dowry, but a profound rite of preparing a young woman for marriage, reflecting the family's care for her future.

This tradition holds more than material gifts: through the dowry, cultural codes, family values and everyday wisdom were passed on. A girl was taught to keep a home, tend the hearth and absorb the traditions of her lineage. The preparation itself became a school of growing up and inner maturing.

How did it happen in the past?

In the Middle Ages, when girls married at an early age, the dowry began to be gathered from childhood - most often it was the mother who did this.

It was said: «Жасауды алты жастан жинасаң - асады, жеті жастан жинасаң - жетеді» (gather the dowry from six and it will be lavish, from seven and it will be in time), stressing the importance of early preparation. Clothes, dishes, bedding and jewelry were collected. In wealthy families - even a yurt, livestock and carpets.

Almost everything was made by hand, and each item carried a personal meaning: made by the mother's hands, it became a family heirloom. The dowry was stored in chests, on top of which the сәукеле was placed - a wedding headdress richly adorned with silver, coral and coins.

After the bride's send-off, her parents brought the dowry to the groom's house. There a showing ceremony took place - with treats, gifts and a festive дастархан.

How is the dowry gathered today?

The composition of the dowry, as before, depends on the region, traditions and the family's financial means. Its contents are a reflection of family values, and each family has its own.

The сәукеле is still sewn by hand, and many pieces of jewelry and elements of the wardrobe are made to order. But today a large part of the dowry consists of ready-made goods - textiles, dishes, household appliances. This simplifies the process without stripping it of meaning.
